Both Shackleford and his wife, Pat, claimed to be practising traditional witches. His novels often featured themes of witchcraft and the occult, usually set in the British countryside. Shackleford became a full time writer in the late 70s after working as a professional boxer, professional cricketer, school-master, folk singer, cabaret dancer and fork-lift truck driver. Despite his work being somewhat underlooked at the time of publication, Shackleford has gained a cult following in recent years for his novels in the horror fiction genre.
